Approximately 8-12 million tonnes of plastic finds it way into our oceans each year, and disposable, single-use packaging makes up a huge percentage of that overall figure. Earlier this year we decided to do our bit and we are proud to share that Swan at Shakespeare’s Globe is plastic free!
The beverages from our tap houses and cafe are now all served in compostable cups which are made from sustainable and recycled plant resources which are also low carbon and can be recycled with food waste. Plant-based compostable bio-plastics can break down in under 90 days, and leave no toxicity in the soil. By moving to compostable catering disposables means that food and packaging waste can be recycled together and provides the only true recycling solution for zero waste in food service.
We have also stopped stocking plastic straws, offering paper alternatives upon request, and we have replaced bottled water with canned water instead. Aluminium cans can be recycled an infinite number of times, and our resealable cans mean that they can be easily taken into the theatre without the fear of them spilling. We can also say that around 95% of our site waste is accounted for and recycled.
In the bar, restaurant and for events we have taken to filtering our water on site. Guests can choose from still and sparkling water with zero carbon emissions as there is no need for transportation. When possible our food is sourced from local producers and suppliers, again reducing our carbon footprint. Plus, seasonal ingredients always make for fresher and tastier dishes!
