Our bar team is delighted to be a part of Fairtrade Fortnight with FAIR. Drinks.
From 9th March until 22nd March we shall be raising money to support the Nuevo Amanecer group in Bolivia. Harvesting quinoa by hand in some of the harshest conditions in the world, the farmers of Nuevo Amanecer benefit from a living wage thanks to Fair Trade practices. The group focuses on empowering farmers to sustain their environmen t through certified organic farming and traditional cultivation techniques. Located in Oruro, in the Southern High Lands of Bolivia at an elevation of 12,000 feet, and with less than 10 inches of rain per year, quinoa is the only crop that can grow in this area.
Traditional organic growers in Bolivia’s semi-arid highlands are facing a great threat. The uprising of Peruvian agribusinesses concentrated on the Pacific coast is creating a strong competitive environment, and threatening the Bolivian farmers. With the use of insecticides and fertilisers, the coastal valley can harvest twice a year compared to only once in the highland, further pushing the crop to be sold at a lower price.
Organic production is good for the people and the land. The support from Nuevo Amanecer has strengthened the farming communities, allowing them to improve their houses and livelihoods, build water reservoirs and install tap water. Furthermore, it has eased the backbreaking work in the field as they have been able to purchase machinery for cleaning the quinoa, ultimately bringing families together.
By supporting FAIR. drink’s THIS IS FAIR campaign, you too can help the Nuevo Amanecer association guarantee an organically grown, fair trade quinoa to all.
It’s as easy as 1=1. During the Fairtrade Fortnight £1 from every one of our fantastic FAIR cocktails sold will be donated to the Nuevo Amanecer Association.
